Independent Study Project

Task: Your project should be a teaching unit on an area of personal interest. You will create a PowerPoint presentation or a Web site about your topic.

Example: Fred is interested in magic, so Fred decides to build a Web site about magic. At his site, Fred will provide the following: a brief history of magic (including some famous magicians and classic tricks and illusions), links to other sites about magic, a tutorial on a trick or two, and any other information he deems relevant.

Procedure: Explore the Internet using good search techniques. Find sites you can link to and places to get information about your topic. Fred found the following sites:

http://magic.about.com/hobbies/magic/
This site helped him to learn the magic trick "He’s dead, Jim!" which fools people into believing the magician has no pulse. Fred made a PowerPoint presentation about the trick complete with illustrations demonstrating how to do the trick.

http://www.montysmagic.com/learn.html
Monty’s Magic is a place to subscribe to a monthly newsletter on learning magic. It also provides courses in magic.

http://www.lanceburton.com/
Lance Burton’s Web site helps the novice magician learn magic tricks. It also provides a resource for buying supplies to perform magic.

http://amazon.com
Fred found and listed many useful books for learning magic at the Amazon online store. He copied the title, author, and ISBN and took them to the school librarian and asked her to get them from Keystone AEA through their book loan program.

The Getting Started Sample link below is a PowerPoint presentation which has been saved for the Web as HTML. It is both a model of what you can do with PowerPoint and a step-by-step guide to doing the project. Review it before you begin so that you have a better idea of where you are going and what you are expected to include in your project whether you do it in PowerPoint or in GoLive (See the directions below for GoLive basics).

Remember: This is a chance for you to explore something you are interested in, so pick a topic you really want to learn more about and to share with others!

Links: Below are links to guide you through this project. We will cover this material during the first week of the project, but you should refer to it as needed for guidance. The rubrics will be used to grade you throughout each stage of the project.
